what I love about his heel raise is that it promotes a perfect weight shift, which is probably the most important part of the downswing, or at least it is in my swing. A lot of the modern golf swing doesn't really allow for that type of free movement in the knee and heel, yet they still want you to 'feel' as though you are transferring 80% of your weight to your front foot as the start of your downswing, but obviously unless you do a million reps in slow motion, it's very difficult to get the feel of 80% while theres so much going on during a swing. allowing the heel to raise, and then planting it back down essentially forces much of the weight on that side and works as a timing mechanism much like a leg kick in a baseball swing for many batters. (jose bautista comes to mind as a guy who was a struggling player until he developed a leg kick that helped him time up his swing and turned him into an elite power hitter without really being a very big guy)

I'm not sure I agree on the source of power in Jack's swing Adam. He's often said in his videos that he let the arms swing and the body reacted to that.

I was always taught and reading Golf My Way to raise my left heel for a bigger turn like the GOAT Jack of course…..for me the left heel was the first thing i moved down like crushing a can which brought me from the top….. it was always a timed move for me to move the weight down into the slot…..

Jack does clearly state in his video "Golf My Way" that once he shifts his weight to his front foot he immediately begins to release the club using his "hands and wrists".
Mike Austin called it "step and throw".
So the hands are not passive. They are active participants but only AFTER the weight shift has commenced. "Step and throw" , not throw and step, which is what hackers do.

The greatest, most consistent golf swing of our time. Jacks golf swing is timeless.

Nicklaus was doing it years ago, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-R1MVQ18QE , also Buba , make the big K with the left knee

Nice Video

I can tell you the reverse C jack swing is accuracy and power golf nirvana. Why today's players don't use it is beyond me…

Santiago De Ponce December 24, 2020 - 10:13 pm

Little fade😁

Could have used better film of Jack

Your analysis was probably just fine but your choice of videos wasn’t.

If a normal golfer like me (handicap 16) tries this, do we need a lot of fitness training to make the lower body supple? Jack was obviously very strong and elastic!

Richard L. July 31, 2021 - 3:29 am

Adam, great piece on Jack. You bring up a number of great points. You mention his coil into his right side while keeping club in front of him. His club works up and not around. You mention his head stays still but moves and pre sets into his right side in his set up, otherwise his head would move with his spine. As you point out, his body and big muscles moves the club rather than hands and arms. Finally, like all good players his lower body is key and his change of direction creates the pressure and torque of the shaft for his superior distance. Agree, if Jack was playing today he would be one of the longest. I am not certain some of today’s long hitters could succeed with persimmon and balata and high spin. Thank you.

I like the drill at the end. It gave me a good concept for what the golf swing it suppose the feel like. This should be the first drill the you learn. (Also I know the heel lift seem to targeted toward older golfer but I’m 20 and didn’t start golf until about a year ago and this older style of swing seems a lot simpler and more repeatable and longer. Even if people say that swing I like a old man or have a 🦖swing, I’ll take for lower score any day lol.

Suresh Thiagarajan December 6, 2022 - 1:03 am

The lifting of right leg (I'm a leftie) is a natural move for me as a result of my winding. My first golf instructor actually said that's completely wrong and legs shouldn't raise at all. This video is such a revelation, there's not right or wrong as long as the key basics are done well. Thank you Adam.

All those analyses from this guru but nothing whatsoever on the most important fundamental of all. Jack's head and centre hardly ever moved duringvthe swing. Power with accuracy plus an upright swing = greatness.

Nigel Skipping December 10, 2022 - 4:27 pm

He had a K position start that simplifies the back swing. His head was dead still too. He knew how to use his feet too.

Jack Nicklaus record of proffesional golfer🌏🖐

Chris Brimhall January 24, 2023 - 5:04 am

Now….put a modern titanium head driver, a modern golf ball and he is 26 years old…….325 minimum every time. The man hit a 360 plus yard drive with a 43” persimmon head driver…..imagine

Thank you. I needed to see this. I've gotten so much into this shallowing trend advice and I have limited right wrist mobility from breaking my wrist and hand 2x. I've been hitting the ball pretty well lately. So I stopped the down the line and looked at it (4:20) and I mean I'm steeper coming down but not by much and you could literally lay my picture over his at 4:22 and it's almost exact. I just need to get left sooner and harder.
